Coach predicts late finish for Conor McGregor over “Cowboy”

SBG head coach John Kavanagh doesn't think conditioning or cardio will be an issue when his pupil Conor McGregor faces "Cowboy" Cerrone at UFC 246

The first UFC event of the year is approaching, as Conor McGregor is set to return against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event at UFC 246. While McGregor ha previously had issues with cardio in later rounds and stads at 1-1 in welterweight, conditioning supposedly wont be an issue. In a recent interview with The Mac Life, John Kavanagh, head coach to McGregor, predicts a late finish over “Cowboy”.

“I think it’s going to be late,” Kavanagh said. “I could see it in the championship rounds. That’s the mindset that I personally have – to be ready for that. Now, he could spark him in seconds. But I think there’s a little extra weight involved, so I think in the later rounds.”

This is interesting, as McGregor has only gone past the second round in three out of his 25 professional bouts. The fact that the bout is contested at welterweight also raises interesting scenarios, as Cerrone has substantially more experience at that weight class. So far McGregor has only faced Nate Diaz twice at welterweight, with one win and one loss.

Both fighters enter the bout on the heels of losses. McGregor most recently faced arch rival Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, losing via fourth round submission. Meanwhile, Cerrone has lost his two past bouts via T/KO. First he lost a TKO to title contender Tony Ferguson, and was then knocked out by Justin Gaethje. If successful against Cerrone, McGregor has said that he plans at least two additional fights this year.
