Daniel Cormier on Jones vs. Aspinall: “As Soon as Possible”
Dana White Guarantees the Fight
UFC President Dana White has officially promised fans what they’ve been waiting for: Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall. During the UFC Tampa press conference, White guaranteed the heavyweight showdown will happen next year. He even called it “the biggest heavyweight fight of all time.” White’s public guarantees are rare, making this announcement even more significant. Fans can now look forward to what might become one of the most historic matchups in UFC history.
Cormier Confident the Fight Will Happen
Daniel Cormier, a longtime rival of Jon Jones, has shared his thoughts on White’s statement. Speaking with MMA Junkie, Cormier expressed confidence that the fight is nearly finalized. He believes Jones has likely secured the lucrative payday he was seeking before agreeing to face Aspinall.
Cormier dismissed claims that Jones was avoiding the fight due to fear. Instead, he argued that Jones’ hesitation was purely strategic.
“I don’t think he’s scared of anyone. I think he thought, ‘I want a sum so big that I can ride off into the sunset and be done,’” said Cormier.
Cormier also noted that White wouldn’t publicly guarantee the fight unless negotiations were close to completion or already finalized.

Jones Aware of Time’s Impact
Cormier pointed out that timing is crucial for Jon Jones, who will likely want the fight as early as possible in 2024.
“With every month that passes, he gets older while Tom Aspinall keeps improving. He’ll want to do it as soon as possible. He doesn’t want to wait until New York, when he’s almost 38 or 39, while that kid [Aspinall] keeps getting better,” Cormier explained.
Setting the Stage for a Historic Match
Jones is currently recovering from a torn pectoral muscle suffered while preparing for UFC 295. Meanwhile, Aspinall has been making waves, capturing the interim heavyweight title with a dominant win over Sergei Pavlovich.
If the fight is scheduled early next year, it could headline a major UFC event and potentially break records for viewership and revenue. Fans are eagerly awaiting the official announcement of this blockbuster bout.
