Amanda Nunes Says ‘It’s Nothing Personal,’ But She Wants To Fight Cris Cyborg

Could we be heading for another champion vs champion super fight in 2018?

Just when you thought the talk of super fights was about to die down and champions would remain in their divisions, it appears we have yet another one brewing with Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes.

Cyborg, the UFC women’s featherweight champion, last weekend successfully defended her title for the first time when she defeated Holly Holm via unanimous decision at UFC 219. Straight after the fight, the talk was about who she would want to face next and one name she’s been linked with in the past few days is the UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Nunes.

Despite yesterday Cyborg saying she would rather focus on fighting a woman with a win at 145-pounds and who is the highest ranked featherweight she can possibly face, Nunes reached out on social media last evening to clarify exactly where she stands when it comes to putting on a champion vs champion fight.

Speaking via her Twitter account, Nunes wrote:

“First of all, I have nothing personal against @criscyborg I do believe it is the fight that everyone wants to see and a fight where we can both leave our marks on this sport.”

Cyborg then responded to Nunes reiterating her desire to face a natural 145-pounds fighter:

“I will fight the #1 contender available with a win at 145 in the last year next. My mark on the sport will be opening doors for all women.”

Despite Cyborg’s reluctance to fight Nunes, UFC President Dana White earlier in the week made it very clear he wants to see an all champion showdown.

“First of all, Amanda Nunes wants to fight her. Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. That is the fight to make and that is the fight I will make. That’s the fight,” White told Yahoo! Sports.

“Amanda Nunes is a big strong, powerful puncher. I think she matches up very well with Cyborg, too, and I think that’s a fun fight. That’s the fight to make.”

This is certainly going to be one to keep your eyes on as it develops.
