Dricus du Plessis: “People See Khamzat as a Bogeyman”

✔ The Middleweight Champion Is Not Afraid of Chimaev

Successful Title Defense at UFC 312

Dricus du Plessis successfully defended his UFC Middleweight Championship on February 9, 2025, at UFC 312 in Sydney, Australia. Facing Sean Strickland in a highly anticipated rematch, he dominated the fight and won by unanimous decision with scores of 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46.

From the opening bell, du Plessis set the pace with relentless pressure. In the fourth round, he landed a powerful strike that broke Strickland’s nose, making it difficult for the American to maintain his usual forward-moving style. This moment shifted the momentum, allowing the South African champion to take full control. Addressing Strickland’s injury, du Plessis defended his opponent against post-fight criticism.

“Think about the shots that Sean Strickland had to take. When your nose is broken the way his was, it’s not easy to keep moving forward and fighting,” du Plessis stated.

Strickland Faces Criticism, Du Plessis Responds

Despite his toughness, Strickland faced heavy criticism following the fight, even from his own coach, Eric Nicksick. The trainer suggested that his fighter lacked intensity and determination, leading to speculation about his motivation to remain at the top.

“He needs to evaluate what he really wants. If he’s not 100% committed, this sport isn’t for him,” Nicksick stated post-fight.

Some analysts labeled Strickland’s performance as “disappointing,” but du Plessis was quick to defend his rival. He argued that critics often fail to understand the difficulty of fighting at such an elite level.

“Anyone criticizing Strickland has never stood in front of me,” du Plessis said. “It’s easy to talk from the outside, but inside that cage, it’s a completely different reality.”

Du Plessis Ready for Chimaev Challenge

With Strickland behind him, du Plessis is now focused on Khamzat Chimaev, an undefeated fighter widely regarded as one of the most dangerous in the division. Many believe that Chimaev’s relentless wrestling and constant pressure could be a problem for the champion, but du Plessis remains unfazed.

“People see Khamzat as a bogeyman, that’s a fact. But I don’t. I only see an opportunity to strengthen my legacy even further,” du Plessis declared.

Chimaev, who holds a perfect 14-0 record, recently defeated Robert Whittaker, once again proving his dominance. However, du Plessis believes the Chechen-born fighter’s weaknesses have already been exposed, particularly in his fights against Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman, where he struggled in later rounds.

“He gasses out. We saw it against Burns. We saw it against Usman. The longer the fight goes, the more it favors me,” du Plessis explained.

Will the Fight Be Confirmed for Summer 2025?

Reports suggest that UFC is planning du Plessis vs. Chimaev for International Fight Week in July, one of the biggest events of the year. A matchup between these two would be among the most anticipated fights of 2025 and could reshape the middleweight division.

Dana White has hinted that the fight is in the works, though nothing has been officially confirmed. However, du Plessis is ready for the challenge.

“If Khamzat is next, perfect. I want to fight the best and stay active. Let’s go,” he stated.

With two of the division’s most dangerous fighters on a collision course, the middleweight title picture is heating up. The question remains: Will Chimaev’s wrestling be too much, or will du Plessis’ power and endurance expose his weaknesses?
