Khabib Nurmagomedov aiming for 2020 return in Russia
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is still undefeated after yet another successful title defence. At UFC 242 he took on interim champion Dustin Poirier and made it look easy. Nurmagomedov submitted the American in the third round without facing much adversity. While the exact circumstances for his UFC return are unclear, Nurmagomedov does have preferences.
Nurmagomedov’s manager Rizvan Magomedov revealed that the UFC champ is hoping for a return in February or March. Not only that, but he would prefer for his next title defence to be on home soil, and is hoping for the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg.

“According to Russian outlet
@tassagency_en, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s next bout is being targeted for February or March,” MMA Journalist Aaron Bronstetter wrote on Twitter. “Per his manager @Rizvan_RM Khabib mentioned in an interview with @channelone_rus that he’d like it to be at Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg, which holds 75,000.”
A potential title defence in St Petersburg has the potential to become one of the biggest MMA events in history. A record-setting return to the UFC would further catapult Nurmagomedov to super stardom. He has already set records, though. In his UFC 229 title defence against Conor McGregor, the event broke all records for MMA pay-per-views.
