Islam Makhachev Secures Historic Victory at UFC 311
Unexpected Matchup: Makhachev vs. Moicano – Becomes Lightweight Champion With Most Defenses
Islam Makhachev, the reigning lightweight champion, made history at UFC 311 by defeating Renato Moicano via submission in the first round. Originally slated to face top contender Arman Tsarukyan, Makhachev had to adapt to a last-minute opponent change when Tsarukyan withdrew due to undisclosed medical reasons. Renato Moicano, ranked ninth in the lightweight division, stepped in on short notice. Moicano was initially scheduled to fight Beneil Dariush on the same card, but the reshuffling elevated him to the main event. Makhachev’s victory not only marked his fourth consecutive title defense but also made him the lightweight fighter with the most defenses in UFC history.
The Fight: Makhachev’s Signature Finish
The fight began with Moicano pressing forward aggressively, determined to seize his unexpected opportunity. Both fighters traded strikes early, with Moicano appearing to briefly stagger Makhachev midway through the first round. However, it became clear that the champion had merely slipped. With just under a minute remaining in the round, Makhachev capitalized on a small opening and secured a darce choke, one of his signature submissions. Moicano tapped out immediately, marking another dominant finish for Makhachev. Commentator Daniel Cormier praised Makhachev’s precision, noting that the champion never misses a chance to exploit his opponent’s mistakes.

Post-Fight Interview: Makhachev Ready for Any Challenge
In his post-fight octagon interview with Joe Rogan, Makhachev emphasized his confidence and readiness to finish any fight.
“If my opponent gives me even a small chance, I’ll take it and end the night,” said the lightweight champion. Makhachev also dismissed any concerns about accepting a last-minute opponent.
“It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who can make 155 lbs, step into the cage, and face me,” he stated. When asked about his next opponent, Makhachev showed no preference.
“I love this belt. It’s not my job to choose opponents. If someone wants it, come get it,” he concluded.
What’s Next for Makhachev?
With four consecutive title defenses, Islam Makhachev has solidified his status as one of the greatest lightweight champions in UFC history. The division remains highly competitive, with potential challengers like Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and rising star Mateusz Gamrot. UFC President Dana White is expected to announce the next title fight soon, and fans eagerly await Makhachev’s next challenge.
