Ben Askren Says ‘Highly Overrated’ Nate Diaz Would Be ‘Easy Money’ For Tyron Woodley
Ben Askren is currently preparing for the final fight of his career next Friday, but one of his closest friends Tyron Woodley is currently being linked with a fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 219.
Speakingy exclusively to MMANytt.com from Singapore earlier today, Askren gave his thoughts on the potential fight and he said he couldn’t quite believe the UFC were trying to put the fight together.
“I thought it was happening, but who knows, maybe not now,” Askren said. “To be honest, who knows why Nate Diaz deserves a title shot, but hey, I’m all for Tyron getting the easy money.”
Diaz’s recent form and record at 170-pounds appears to be the reason for his Askren’s disdain. According to him, if the fight gets made, Woodley wins easily.
“Nate Diaz sucks,” Askren said. “He’s not good and he’s 2-3 as a welterweight. I mean come on man. Seriously, Tyron wins this any way he wants to.
“Nate Diaz is one of the most highly overrated fighters in the world.”
“His only wins ever against real welterweights are Rory Markham and Marcus Davis,” Askren continued, laughing as he said it.”. Before he even had the Conor McGregor feud he wasn’t looking any good.
“Trust me, the fact the UFC are willing to give Nate Diaz a title shot, it tells you a lot about where they’re at these days. But, yeah, I’ll just stop myself there.
“I mean, come on, it’s actually ridiculous.”
When asked what would happen if Diaz stepped into the cage with Askren himself, the ONE Championship welterweight champion was confident he’d beat Diaz dominantly.
“Come on this is just stupid,” Askren said. “I’d throw him on his ass and punch him in the face. He poses absolutely zero threat.
“I’d literally just toss him down and punch him until I’m told to stop.”
Look out for our full interview with Askren next week as he approaches the final fight of his career against the MMA legend, Shinya Aoki.
